Tree Fruit Day Promotes Industry and Legislative Policies

Recently 25 industry representatives participated in the 8th annual Tree Fruit Day in Olympia. One of the objectives of Tree Fruit Day is bringing producers face-to-face with key lawmakers to discuss critical industry issues. Industry representatives met with more than 65 legislators and Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee. The one-day event is a powerful public relations and government affairs tool for the tree fruit industry. Our representatives helped communicate the importance of the tree fruit industry to the economic well being of the state.

The 2009 Legislative Session Concluded April 26, in time for the legislature to send 2009-11 operating and capital budgets and nearly 600 bills to the governor. During the 2009 session, lawmakers introduced 2,584 bills and approved 599. The governor has until May 19 to sign bills approved by the legislature. Bills that the governor does not veto within 20 days of the end of session become law without her signature. She may veto portions of bills, but nothing smaller than a full section.
